New 220,000-square-foot facility expands Pfizer’s Groton footprint and underscores long-term investment in Connecticut
GROTON, Connecticut – November 5, 2026 — AdvanceCT announced today that the global biopharmaceutical company Pfizer plans to build a Manufacturing Technology Center at its research and development campus in Groton, representing a $650 million capital investment over the next five years.
The approximately 220,000-square-foot facility will produce clinical active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug products that support Pfizer-sponsored clinical trials around the world. Construction is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with operational startup targeted for mid- 2031.
“Pfizer has a long and proud history of scientific innovation in Groton, where many of the discoveries that advance our pipeline begin. Building on that legacy, the new Manufacturing Technology Center will advance our ability to support clinical research and the development of new medicines for patients around the world,” said Raja Mangipudy, Ph.D., Groton Site Head.
The project will consolidate employees currently working in other facilities across the Groton campus into a modern, purpose-built center. It will modernize the infrastructure supporting Pfizer’s existing workforce and bring related operations together within a new facility designed for the company’s future clinical manufacturing needs.
“Connecticut’s economic strategy is centered on driving innovation in the industries where our workforce, research institutions, and established companies give us the ability to lead,” said Daniel O’Keefe, Commissioner of Economic Development for the State of Connecticut. “Pfizer’s investment is an endorsement of the strong momentum across Connecticut’s economy, as companies in a wide range of industries choose to expand, modernize, and make long-term commitments here. It is another clear signal that Connecticut offers the collaborative environment global companies need to innovate and grow with confidence.”
“Pfizer’s decision to make this major investment in Groton demonstrates the continued value of the highly specialized research and development capabilities that have been built here,” said John Bourdeaux, President and CEO of AdvanceCT. “The Manufacturing Technology Center will connect scientific discovery with the advanced manufacturing capabilities needed to support clinical trials around the world. It is a significant vote of confidence in Groton, its workforce, and Connecticut’s ability to support biopharmaceutical innovation at a global scale.”
Pfizer’s Groton campus is one of the company’s major research and development centers, supporting scientific discovery, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical development, and the global supply of materials used in clinical research.
The City of Groton has remained an important partner to Pfizer and will continue supporting the company as the Manufacturing Technology Center advances through planning, construction, and operational startup. The investment builds on Pfizer’s longstanding presence in the community and further strengthens Groton’s position as a center for pharmaceutical research and development.
“Pfizer has been an important part of the Groton community for generations, providing jobs, supporting our local economy, and advancing research that makes a difference in people’s lives globally,” said Jill Rusk, Mayor of the City of Groton. “This new Manufacturing Technology Center reflects a long-term commitment to our city and the talented people who work here. We appreciate Pfizer’s continued investment in Groton and look forward to working together to strengthen our community.”
“Pfizer’s presence in both the Town and City of Groton is an extraordinary asset to our community and the southeastern Connecticut region,” said Juliette Parker, Mayor of the Town of Groton. “We are proud to see Pfizer continue to invest in Groton and look forward to our continued partnership, and supporting the opportunities this facility will create for our residents, businesses, and region.”
