First-Ever “CT Economic Development Day/Week” to Feature Programs, Events and Activities Highlighting Intensifying Efforts Statewide

Connecticut’s intensifying economic development efforts will be front and center next week as the International Economic Development Council (IEDC)’s Economic Development Week and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)’s National Small Business Week coincide and will be marked by an array of activities, events and programs highlighting the work underway throughout the

The week’s activities will include a series of podcasts and webinars coordinated by the AdvanceCT, as well as a legislative reception hosted by the Connecticut Economic Development Association (CEDAS).

The centerpiece of the week will be Connecticut Economic Development Day at the State Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Hartford on Wednesday, May 8 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The state’s leading economic development organizations, which work closely with businesses and municipalities throughout the state, will be on hand with informational displays and staff experts.

They include the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), AdvanceCT, CEDAS, Connecticut Main Street Center, Council of Small Towns (COST), CT Next, CT Small Business Administration and CT Small Business Development Center. Representatives of the University of Hartford’s Entrepreneurial Center & Women's Business Center, Eversource and UI will also be representing economic and business development in Connecticut.

CEDAS Best Practices and Selfie Contest

During a legislative reception on May 8 at 10 AM in the LOB private dining room, CEDAS will announce the launch of a newly developed Best Practices Program in Local Economic Development.

CEDAS is also urging local government professionals and elected officials from around the state to participate in Connecticut’s first-ever #EconomicDevelopmentWeekCT selfie contest. The top-three most liked photos will be featured as the CEDAS Facebook page cover photo. The initiative is aimed at highlighting the many economic development efforts underway across the state.

AdvanceCT Webinars & Podcasts

AdvanceCT will be offering two webinars during the week, Business Start-up 101 (on May 7, 11:30-12) and Business Creation (on May 9, 11:30-12). The first will feature Beth Wallace, AdvanceCT Director of Business Services, guiding listeners through the licensing and registration process in Connecticut and SBA’s Moraima Gutierrez presenting the steps businesses need to know about before starting a business. The second will be led by AdvanceCT Vice President of Municipal Services, Courtney Hendricson, discussing ways officials can help their community “create” business and exploring how communities are engaging and supporting home-based businesses.

AdvanceCT will also be releasing 10 podcasts on partner economic development organizations and programs. The daily AdvanceCTONOMY episodes will feature the Community Economic Development Fund, SCORE, reSET, CT Next, SBDC, CT Main Street, CEDAS, COST, as well as CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and UConn for their brownfields programs.

Additionally, AdvanceCT is debuting a library of videos featuring some of the state’s leading business organizations, and a series of interviews with Celebrate CT awardees recently honored by AdvanceCT. The interviews were conducted by Emmy Award-winning David Bibbey of Connecticut Means Business, producers of corporate video and social media content and a growing expertise video library series for Connecticut’s business community.

SBA’s National Small Business Week is observed across the country the first week in May. The annual event recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.
