Working Together to Find Inventive Solutions

Posted on by Sadie Colcord

Wanted to share a recent success story – from our work for the Town of Seymour – that underscores the positive economic outcomes that happen when town, state, and private partners work together to find inventive solutions.

Earlier this week I attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently-expanded Seymour facility of the Emery Winslow Scale Company. Emery Winslow is a manufacturer that produces industrial scales and weighing systems for sectors like aerospace, agriculture, transportation, and even aquariums and zoos (their scales weigh large animals like whales and elephants!). The company has been located in Connecticut since 1868, and it continues to grow and thrive here. Emery Winslow had an additional manufacturing facility in Indiana for many years, but leaders recently decided to consolidate those operations back in Connecticut. In turn, the Seymour facility was expanded and new employees were added. At a time when we often hear about businesses leaving the state, it is incredibly refreshing to know that companies like Emery Winslow remain committed to staying and growing here.

The Town of Seymour and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) were great partners to Emery Winslow, as the Town provided a speedy permitting process and a local fixed tax assessment agreement. DECD also provided support to ensure that this project was a good fiscal decision for the company. Everyone was working on the same team, and the result was well worth the investment of time, energy, and resources. Stories like Emery Winslow’s are so critical to changing the narrative about Connecticut’s business community.
